During the Spanish colonial era, Guanabacoa was Cuba's slave trading center. In the suburbs of Habana, this city's culture is a reflection of its Afro-Cuban heritage. There is a saying in Cuba: "When you are sick, go to Guanabacoa." This refers to the many devotees of Santería and other African religions who practice healing there.
Working in this multi-cultural city is Rubén Calzado, a civil engineer and now pastor, whose family has turned its home into a Casa Culto, a church within a house.
Located on a historic road that the Spanish once took from Guanabacoa to Habana, La Gallega Baptist Church, with approximately 40 members, ministers to youth and adults of the area.
