Along Holguín Province's coast are beautiful white beaches, destination points for many tourists. In was in this province that Christopher Columbus first stepped on Cuban soil in 1492, and it was here that former Cuban President Fidel Castro was born.
The provincial captial is Holguín, a city of approximately 200,000, with beautiful Spanish homes, attractive colonial plazas, and a thriving cultural infrastructure. Since the revolution in 1959, Holguín has become an industrial city and contains Cuba's major brewery and a factory that processes sugarcane.
The city of Holguín is 771 kilometers (478 miles) from Havana.
