The two churches in Sancti Spíritus Province seeking sister churches are in the province's largest cities: Sancti Spíritus and Trinidad, a city on the southern coast that was frequently attacked by pirates from Jamaica and Tortuga. The province has about 500,000 inhabitants and is a little more than twice the size of Rhode Island.
Many tourists enjoy visiting Sancti Spíritus and Trinidad because both contain architecture that dates back to Spanish colonial rule. Trinidad has almost no twentieth century architecture, and Sancti Spíritus, founded in 1514, contains Cuba's oldest church, the Parroquial Mayor, just south of the city's main square. The provincial capital, also known as Sancti Spíritus, is 386 miles (240 miles) from Habana.
